How to Know if You’ve Picked the Right Makeup Artist

Picking a makeup artist for any special occasion in your life can not only be overwhelming but also confusing if you don’t know what to look for in an artist! Whether you’re a bride or just looking to get your makeup done for a special occasion, here are a few things to look out for to see if an artist is right for you:

  1. Half the job as a makeup artist is communicating with your clients effectively and professionally. How is your artist communicating with you? Are they responsive when you contact them? Do they inform you of their policies and booking procedure? Are they clear communicators? Are they kind, or do they make you feel like you are a burden or are rude when you reach out? These are all things to keep in mind while booking! You will save yourself a lot of headaches if you realize early on whether or not they are good communicators. On the contrary, try to keep in mind that makeup artists typically work crazy hours, so it may take a bit to get back to you initially!
  2. Your makeup artist should be receptive to instructions, special requests, and preferences. If you have a trial and you ask for a bronzy Smokey eye but your artist simply does what she wants on you and gives you the opposite, she’s probably not the artist for you. A great artist will offer their professional opinion on what look will compliment you best, but it’s important that we as artists LISTEN to what the client wants and provide it to the best of our ability.
  3. Sanitation is so important! Especially with Covid running rampant. Be sure your artist is executing proper hygiene and sanitation protocol. Your artist should have enough brushes to complete each lady’s face without having to reuse any dirty brushes on another person’s face. They should also have disposable makeup and lip wands to prevent cross-contamination. Washing/sanitizing hands in between each client is also a must! Proper sanitation is non-negotiable!
  4. Take a look at your potential artist’s portfolio. Lots of filters and smoothing photoshop is a clear indication that their work probably doesn’t look like that in person. Look out for artists that have clear, unedited photos of their work on their page to be sure you will achieve the look you are hoping for when you sit in their chair!
